Uninvited Guests and the Sanctuary to Protect. Wisdom of "Quarantine" to Protect Life from Parasites.

When we welcome a new goldfish, we are captivated by its beauty and want to put it in the tank where its friends are waiting immediately. However, sometimes there are small "uninvited guests" lurking there that are difficult to see with the naked eye.Hello, I'm Juane*.

Today, I would like to talk about parasites such as anchor worms and fish lice, and the custom of "quarantine (treatment)" to protect the precious sanctuary.

True Nature of "Discomfort" That Appears

Something like a thin thread is stuck in the goldfish's body, or a transparent disc-shaped thing is moving. That is the figure of parasites called anchor worms and fish lice. They suck the body fluid of goldfish, give itching and pain, and sometimes cause secondary infections from there.

What makes them different from diseases caused by bacteria so far is that they are there as "physical existence". You may be shocked when you find them, but please calm down first. They are also desperate to live, but as the person responsible for protecting the "harmony" of that place, we need to deal with them quietly.

Respect for New Friends Named "Quarantine"

The most important thing to prevent such troubles in advance is the time called "quarantine".When you welcome a new child, instead of putting it into the main tank suddenly, have it spend about 1 to 2 weeks in a separate container first. That is not just a "check for disease".

It is a time of "rest" to heal the body tired from a long journey and slowly get used to the new environment.Perform specific 0.5 % salt bath and medicated bath as necessary there.I think that taking that careful step is the expression of sincere respect for the friends who are currently there and for the child who is coming newly.

Observation, the Sharpest Weapon

What finds parasites quickly is not any expensive tool but "observation". "Somehow rubbing the body against gravel" "Swimming is a little restless" Such slight changes in gestures become the key to preventing big troubles. In order to protect the single world called an aquarium, it is also important to have a firm boundary line and turn consciousness to the influence from the outside.Protecting the sanctuary is not coldness but deep love to maintain the peace that exists now.

Pure Water to the Next Generation

How to face parasites teaches us the importance of "caution" and "preparation".Cherish each encounter, and safely. We, Jun * Juane, would like to continue to protect the transparency of that pure water and the purity of life inhabiting there through our works.Paying attention to invisible risks and wrapping them gently.I would like to continue to cherish such a gaze.

Ecology of Parasites(Anchor Worms, Fish Lice) :

Anchor Worm(Lernaea) : A crustacean that pierces its head into the fish's body to parasitize. The pierced part causes inflammation and causes hole disease.

Fish Louse(Argulus) : Also called "butterfly", it moves freely on the body surface of fish with a disc - shaped body and sucks blood with suckers.

Effectiveness of Quarantine(Treatment) : By setting a period to isolate and observe newly introduced individuals, it prevents parasites and bacterial diseases with incubation periods from spreading to the main tank. This is the most basic epidemic prevention measure also performed in aquaculture and public aquariums.

Physical Removal and Medicine : Since there are times when it is difficult to wipe out parasites with medicine alone(depending on the form of eggs and adults), combining careful removal with tweezers and medicine to hit larvae(trichlorfon etc.) is an efficient coping method based on the biological life cycle.
